electric vehicles

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

This really depends on several factors like are you charging at home? Do you have solar panels? Are you using a public charging point? Are you charging your electric vehicle overnight or during the day?  Public charging points will dictate their own rates for charging depending upon the location and type of charger, if you’re using solar power then you could be charging for free, and some grid tariffs will give you cheaper options for charging overnight at home. It will, however, be cheaper to charge at home than it is to use public charging stations.

Do I need solar panels to charge my car?

No. You can install an at home electric vehicle charging point that runs of the national electricity grid.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

This depends upon the type of battery you have I your car and the type of charger you are using and can range from 30 minutes to several hours.

Can I charge my car directly from my solar?

No. Electric vehicles charge via an AC supply so you will need an inverter.

Can I charge my neighbours to use my charging point?

There are home charger available that allow you to charge others to use your charging point and you are able to set your own rate. Click here to ask us more about this

How much do home EV Chargers cost?

This depends upon the type of charger you would like, and the installation required. There may be grants available to help with the cost of installing an EV charger so it’s worth looking into this.

Is it worth getting a home charger?

Compared to standard public charging points, home EV chargers are a lot faster than public points, there’s not worry about queues for public charging, and you may have to travel further to find a charging point that a petrol station, and charging at home with save you money in the long run.

Are all EV chargers universal?

Most UK EV chargers are compatible with all electric vehicles. There are three different levels of home chargers, type 1,2 and 3. The majority of modern electric vehicle charging points have type 2 connectors which is the current industry standard and what is found at public charging points. For more information on the different types of connectors, click here.

What is a smart charger?

Smart charges have access to the internet and can give you features such as remote access to your charger from anywhere in the world, the use of an app to manage and monitor your energy usage and allows you access to share data to optimise your char charging.

solar panels

Will solar panels work when it's cloudy?

Yes. Solar panels work in all weather and do not need constant sunshine or a south facing roof to work effectively

Do I need a large roof to have solar?

Solar panels can be fitted to your roof or land and a genereal 8 panel system for the average household easily fits on the roof of the average 3 bed semi.

Can I use my solar panels in a power cut?

Solar systems generaly have safety features installed in case of power cuts to protect people who may be working on the grid, but you can have back up systems installed so you can use them in the case of a power cut.

Can I go off-grid with a solar panel?

No. Solar panels work during daylight hours so you would either need an alternative energy source or a battery storage solution to be able to come off the grid completely.

Can I charge my electric car with a solar panel?

Yes. If you’re charging your vehicle during daylight hours, if you want to charge your electric vehicle overnight then you will need a solar battery.

How long do solar panels take to install?

Most domestic solar systems will only take a day or two to install with minimal disrution.

battery solutions

Why should I consider battery storage?

Reduce your energy costs and reduce your reliance on energy companies, non-renewable fuels and generate a reliable and ba;anced  energy suppply for your home or property.

What are BESS?

BESS: Battery Energy Storage Systems are rechargeable batteries that can store your energy from different sources to be utilised at a later time when needed.

What are the benefits of home storage?

The benefits will depend on a number of factors, but the main benefits will be the ability to store excess solar-generated energy from your solar system or energy sourced from the grid to be used at a later date. This stored energy can be used for free so if you don’t have solar, you can take advantage of storing energy from the grid to use when charges are higher.

Do I need a large amount of space in my home for battery storage?

No. Most domestic systems are designed to be either wall-mounted or ground mounted but do not take up much space at all and can be installed in a garage or cupboard.

I don't have solar, can I still store energy?

Yes. You can use home storage systems to store energy taken from the grid at off-peak times to be used when norma energy useagae would be higher costs.
